Update Your Legal Name or Preferred or Lived/True Name
Note: Some policies may vary by locations outside of the U.S. If you have questions about how this article's content relates to your location, please consult with your Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) or regional Global HR Operations team.
What is the difference between a legal name and preferred or lived/true name change?
A legal name appears on a government-issued identification, such as a passport or driver's license. At Disney, there are some locations where names cannot be changed unless done so legally. Some of these locations are payroll, tax documentation and personnel records.
A preferred or lived/true name is the name an individual chooses for themselves that may or may not match all or part of their legal name. At Disney, there are many locations preferred or lived/true name can be used instead of a legal first name.
Note: Currently, there is no option to add a preferred middle (name or initial) in our Human Resources (HR) systems, but we are hoping to do so in the future.
What documentation is required to update my legal name at the Company?
To change your legal name, you will need to provide a copy of a government-issued identification document with your correct legal name.
U.S.-based employees must provide one of the following documents:
- U.S. Passport (must be signed).
-
Social Security Card.
Note: If you have recently gone through a legal name change in the U.S. but not yet applied for a new Social Security card, learn how to apply for a new card with the Social Security Administration (SSA) online or by calling 800-772-1213 (TTY 800-325-0778).
- Permanent Resident Card or Alien Registration Receipt.
- Employment Authorization Document Card.
-
A Foreign Passport may suffice, but will need additional review.*
For foreign passport holders:
The name on your foreign passport must exactly match the name on all visas required for your employment. If there is a discrepancy between the documents, you must resolve it with the appropriate government authority before submitting a name change request. We can only update your legal name once the names on your passport and visa(s) match.
The following documents have been accepted in some locations outside of the U.S. For regional document requirements and questions, employees should ask their Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) or regional Global HR Operations team.
- Aadhar Card
- Driver's License
- Divorce Certificate
- Family Certificate/Birth Certificate
- Marriage License/Certificate
- Name Change Certificate
- National ID
- Passport
- Hong Kong Identity Card
- Social Security Card/Social Insurance Number Letter
- National Identification Number

- Email/Microsoft Suite Applications.
- Zoom
- Rostr (preferred or lived/true name only).
- Phone
Note: If any system or platform uses your email address as a login, you will have to update with your new email.
Note: Depending on the system or platform, updates to downstream systems may be automatic, others may take a few days or longer. For more information on timing, please contact Global HR Operations.
Note: If you have recently changed your legal last name and have updated it in all systems, please be advised that some systems and platforms (for example, Rostr) currently will only display your legal last name.
